Saturday Indesign 2024 - 7 September

Saturday Indesign is always a highlight on the calendar for anyone passionate about the world of interiors and design, and this year’s event in Sydney was no exception. As a designer, I’m constantly looking for fresh ideas and new connections to stay inspired and bring a unique perspective to my projects. After feeling long overdue for some creative inspiration and needing a break from being behind the desk, I was particularly excited to dive into the vibrant atmosphere of the event, explore the latest trends, and experience firsthand the creativity and innovation on display.

From beautifully crafted showrooms and insightful designer talks to delicious food and creative installations, the day was filled with memorable moments that reminded me why I love what I do. Join me as I take you through a day in the life of a designer at Saturday Indesign—a day filled with discovery and inspiration.

My day kicked off in the vibrant Darlinghurst precinct, starting at Stylecraft, a showroom known for its commitment to quality and contemporary flair. As I wandered through the space with coffee and a pastry in hand—a fitting start to a day immersed in design—I was struck by the playful, bold approach of the new product lines. The unique shapes and unexpected color combinations sparked plenty of fresh ideas for my upcoming projects.

Next up was District, where I had the opportunity to listen to designer Adam Cornish discuss his latest launch, "Habitat." His focus on incorporating plants into design resonated with me. As a designer with a passion for plants, I’m always looking for ways to bring a touch of nature indoors, and Habitat’s innovative approach to using greenery as an integral design element was both inspiring and refreshing.

A quick stroll led me to Ownworld, where a bright yellow carpet welcomed me into a vibrant space filled with striking local designs. The bold colours and imaginative pieces immediately captured my attention, reflecting the talent and creativity of the designers featured. It was energising to explore such a dynamic collection and see firsthand how local craftsmanship is thriving.

Gohome has recently opened its doors in Darlinghurst, unveiling a space that goes beyond showcasing their designs. In addition to serving as a showroom, the new location features innovative hot-desking areas, catering to the evolving needs of modern professionals. The space also doubles as an event venue available for hire, making it a versatile option for parties and gatherings.

My next stop was Jardan, where I had the opportunity to watch a live demonstration of an upholsterer meticulously constructing a chair. Observing the artisan at work underscored the skill and attention to detail that are integral to creating high-quality furniture. It was fascinating to see how each component came together, reflecting the brand’s dedication to craftsmanship and design integrity.

With a morning filled with delightful food, inspiring talks, and engaging displays, the Darlinghurst precinct had already set a high bar for the day. Feeling creatively invigorated, I headed to the next precinct, ready for more discoveries and experiences.

The afternoon took me to Winnings Appliances, where the vibrant atmosphere was a highlight of the day. The space buzzed with energy, featuring multiple bars, a BBQ, and an impressive spread of food. The expanded showroom provided a dynamic backdrop for exploring the latest in appliances, and the festive environment made the experience even more enjoyable. It was the perfect setting to unwind, connect with fellow design enthusiasts, and fully immerse myself in the lively atmosphere.

Next, I visited Abey in their newly opened showroom, a space I was seeing for the first time. The fresh environment beautifully showcased the brand’s commitment to innovation and quality, with displays featuring their latest offerings. As I explored the exhibits, I savored a gelato cone—a delicious treat that made the browsing experience even more enjoyable.

Not far from these showrooms on Danks Street is Academy Tiles, my next stop. I was mesmerised by their gorgeous selection of tiles. The variety of textures, patterns, and colours was truly impressive. To cap off the visit, I enjoyed a cheese and chocolate buffet, adding a touch of luxury to the tile exploration. It was a perfect way to reflect on the inspiration gathered throughout the event thus far.

As the day began to wind down, I visited Florabelle, where I was struck by their extensive product line, and noted that it is also the new space of Oneworld Collection. I also had the opportunity to rediscover brands I had previously referred to, such as MRD Home and Emac Lawton. Seeing these brands in situ provided me with fresh ideas on how their pieces could be incorporated into future projects.

To wrap up the day, I headed to Living Edge. After exploring the showroom and admiring their beautiful floral displays for the occasion, I retreated to the outdoor patio to rest my legs with an espresso martini and reflect on the whirlwind of the day. Revisiting my favorite moments—from the lively atmosphere at Winnings Appliances to the insightful design talk at District—reminded me of the importance of staying connected within the design community.
